Speakers

Gay Israel, Ed. D.
Overview of PVHS and local medical practices research/outreach collaborations with CSU’s Health and Exercise Science Department: A Winning Combination for Northern Colorado Citizens

Gay is Professor and Head of the Department of Health and Exercise Science and Executive Director of the Human Performance Clinical Research Laboratory at CSU.  Prior to coming to CSU in 1996, he was a Professor and Founding Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at East Carolina University for 15 years. In February 2008, he was honored by ECU as a Centennial Leader (of the last 100 years) of the School of Health and Human Performance. In 2007, he was honored by CSU as a recipient of the Pennock Distinguished Service Award. Nationally, he served as President of the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation from 2005 -2007. At CSU he has served as a catalyst to build research infrastructure, recruit faculty and develop medical and community health collaborations to examine the etiology and prevention of chronic diseases and the promotion of physical activity throughout the lifespan.

Frank Dinenno, Ph.D.
Vascular Control in Aging Humans

Dr. Dinenno received his PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2000, and subsequently trained for 3+ years as post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  His research focuses on the control of peripheral vascular tone under various conditions such as exercise and hypoxia, and importantly, how these control mechanisms are altered by advancing age.  These studies are performed in vivo in human subjects and have implications for vascular function in various disease states that increase in prevalence with age.

Wyatt Voyles, M.D.
Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease – 2008 update

Dr. Voyles received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977.  He then completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases from the University of New Mexico.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases, and has achieved fellowship in the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.  He was an associate scientist at the Lovelace Medical Research Foundation from 1983-85 and a member of the faculty at the University of Oklahoma from 1985-89.  He moved to Colorado to begin private cardiology practice in 1989 and joined Heart Center of the Rockies in 2000.  In addition to his cardiology practice, he serves as medical director of clinical research for the Medical Center of the Rockies Foundation, and is an adjunct faculty member in the department of HES at CSU.

About the NCHRC

The Northern Colorado Health Research Coalition (NCHRC) is a partnership of Colorado State University, Poudre Valley Health System, and Colorado BioScience Association. The NCHRC is focused on finding ways to enhance the opportunities for health-related research in our community.

  • For Poudre Valley Health System, this means greater patient access to research protocols which translates to higher quality care. It also allows PVHS the opportunity to attract and keep physicians who are interested in engaging in research.
  • For CSU, it allows greater access to patient populations that can be difficult for researchers to find in their community.
  • For CBSA, it brings the ability for greater economic development of intellectual property that has been developed through the projects involved with research.

For all three entities, it allows greater strength with grant applications by the pairing of health care and a strong academic institution.

May 24, 2007 - Inaugral Event

The inaugural NCHRC event, held in May of this year, was a huge success and fostered many important relationships and opportunities for new research projects in Northern Colorado. That evening, the NCHRC collected information to learn about particpant's research interest(s). It was also decided to hold a few collaboration meetings each year and have each meeting be singularly focused on one topic.
